- In 2050, the United States entered World War III outnumbered and without allies. After 10 years of futile fighting and defeat the USA turned to a radical new strategy. It was discovered that every living thing generated an energy matrix. This matrix actually became more powerful after death. The Army decided to harness this "soul" energy, using it to make new weapons and super soldiers. With the power of the ghosts, the United States won the war, but at a terrible cost. Some of those infused with the energy became corrupted by it and one very powerful, very evil soul took control of the greatest warrior of the entire conflict. Thus it was that the "Ghost army" took control, and the world was cursed.
- Named as such due to the Charon's perception of synthetic constructs as being "unliving", the Ghost Wars was the most destructive conflict the Charon had waged, with their losses amounting to such magnitudes, that the war against the realspace galaxy was nearly extinguished before it even began. As noted by Prescyla Osiris, and later discovered by some counted among the Galactic Emergency Coalition, the Kolasi were the only known force to nearly defeat the Charon Dominion on equal footing in warfare.

Prior to the Battle of the Otherworld, Jedi Knight Dante Katarn, who was dispatched with the military forces of the Bloodmoon Pact during the incursion, noted that the structural concept and functionality of the Atronachs was strikingly similar to the descriptions of the then-extinct Kolasi, leading him to speculate that the Kolasi were a creation of the Kathol, specifically either a defective form or prototype of the Atronachs themselves.
