Prior to the yo-yo's release, Steve Brown pointed out unforeseen "flat spots" on the edges of the rims, caused by the manufacturing process. Although they look bad, they are actually hard to feel, when running your figure around the edge. The Gear was notorious for these flat spots and had garnered a negative reputation as being considered a low quality product. The Gear release date was pushed back, nearly four months after the pre-order was opened.
