During the Second World War she worked for the Ministry of Economic Warfare and the Board of Trade. She and her husband did much work for refugees from Nazi Germany and Austria, going so far as having them live in their home. She became a member of the London County Council in 1946. There were boundary changes at the 1949 county council election, and she failed to win a seat at Hampstead. In 1952 she returned to the LCC as a councillor for Hackney South and, following another boundary change, from 1955-61 represented Hackney Central. She was awarded the CBE in 1958 and was a Freeman of the London Borough of Hackney.
