Synopsis
| - Jason Rusch is at home. He holds the JLA signal device in his hand and reflects on his recent altercation with Casey Krinsky. He goes to work at Ho-Ho Charlie's Chicken Shack where he learns that Casey is indeed a psychopathic murderer.
After work, he meets with Detroit police officer Nicole Garcia. He fuses with her, and transforms into Firestorm. Jason sees nothing wrong with arbitrarily merging with people, as they have no memory of the incident after they cease to be part of the Firestorm matrix.
Firestorm begins searching for Casey Krinsky. He feels the need to help her, after nearly killing her with a blast of atomic energy. It is Casey however, that actually finds him first. Casey has mutated into a rocky mineral creature and slams Firestorm into the side of a farmhouse silo. Casey is hopelessly insane and claims to love Firestorm despite the fact that she is trying to kill him. Firestorm attempts to use the molecular reconstructuring powers of his predecessor, but this yields an unexpected explosion of energy. Casey reverts to a more manageable size and passes out. Firestorm uses the JLA communicator and signals for help.
Moments later, Superman arrives and prepares to take Casey's unconscious form to S.T.A.R. Labs in San Francisco. As the two heroes fly to California together, Superman questions Jason about his current Firestorm identity. He tells him that he was a close associate of the original Firestorm, and hopes that Jason will do justice to his reputation. After dropping Casey off, Firestorm returns to Detroit and separates from Nicole Garcia.

Notes
| - * The original Firestorm's molecular reconstructuring powers could not affect living tissue. Any attempt to alter biological material resulted in a massive backlash of atomic energy. The same appears to hold true for the current Firestorm as well.
* As of this issue, Superman is unaware of the fact that the original Firestorm is dead.
