The coup was led by General Jarahiya Haftiir, an Imperial Army officer, along with a group of other officers and soldiers loyal to him. Empress Marasiah Fel was not on the planet at the time, and the conspirators of the coup were able to take control of Bastion's administrative buildings and military complexes. Skirmishes occurred with the loyalist factions who remained loyal to Empress Fel, but they were overcome. Following the coup, Haftiir declared himself the Prince Regent of the "New Bastion Empire". The main reason for them carrying out the coup was Imperial nationalism and anger at Fel for allowing the Empire
