- The HEV Suit, or Hazardous EnVironment suit, often called the "Hazard Suit" for the sake of convenience, is a full-body hazardous materials suit developed at the Black Mesa Research Facility. Designed for Black Mesa scientists to protect them from radiation, energy discharges, blunt-force trauma during the handling of hazardous materials, and the effects of traveling to Xen as part of Survey Teams. The HEV Suit is related to both the Powered Combat Vest (PCV) used by the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU), and the armored vest and helmet used by the Black Mesa Security Force.
- The Mark IV HEV is a significant improvement over the usual sort of biohazard/space suit worn by explorers and heavy industrial workers. In addition to being vacuum sealed and resistant to most known chemicals and protective against biological hazards, it has a carbon nanotubule frame with electrical capacities, allowing it to ground out tremendous currents. When it is deformed in any manner, as long as the batteries maintain a charge, these tubules become instantly rigid, offering an astonishing degree of protection from blunt objects, falls, sharp edges, and ballistics - though obviously, ballistic objects can easily penetrate the suit when it is depleted of internal charge.

Designed for Black Mesa scientists to protect them from radiation, energy discharges, blunt-force trauma during the handling of hazardous materials, and the effects of traveling to Xen as part of Survey Teams. It is predominantly worn by Gordon Freeman during much of the Half-Life series - first as the Mark IV suit in Half-Life, then as the upgraded Mark V suit in Half-Life 2. It allows him to sustain many injuries that would normally fatally wound him. The HEV Suit is related to both the Powered Combat Vest (PCV) used by the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU), and the armored vest and helmet used by the Black Mesa Security Force.

The helmet houses a powerful computer and scanning suite, the air supply is auto-filtering, and the frame offers an onboard medical facility capable of handling minor injuries without having to be removed. While it is not true battle armor, it is more suited for hazardous exploration and surviving intensely dangerous environments - traits that it's creator, Garrett Granth, uses to his advantage, using the Mark IV HEV to infiltrate environments that other living beings cannot survive in, rendering battles unneccessary. The Mark IV HEV contains full climbing harnesses, emergency vacuum seals, plating for attaching a jetpack, removable power and computing units, and full manual articulation for tool use and datapad/multi-tool integration. It can interface with a sonic screwdriver as well as most other galactic-class data and tool ports.
