| - In the short time we've been at Haven, we have had our share of bizarre adventures. Already, we have come across an artifact from before the Scourge, a magical device that mechanically looks to be the cross of an astrolabe and mariner's sextant. Unsurprisingly, it bears the moniker of "Astral Sextant." In my study of the device, I found that the techniques taught by my friend and mentor, H'levain, to be quite useful. I should write a letter to him back in Bartertown and see what he makes of it. Addendum: "The Painted Tart" is not a bakery. I shall avoid that place in the future.

I have already woven a few threads to the device. It produces an unnerving voice when fiddling with some of the mechanical levers on it. Apparently, when the arrow on the device points to a Horror, it declares the distance to the nearest Horror along the path. Later, after weaving the second thread to the device, I unwittingly found that it also declares the type of Horror. This was much to my surprise, as I distinctly heard the name "Scurrier" in a harsh whisper followed by "282 yards and 2 feet." The Horrors, it seems, are always so close in Haven. Even after alerting the town guard to the threat, they shrugged their shoulders and said "So what? If you want them gone, then kill 'em yourself!" No doubt, the device will be useful in the future, as the Horrors are always hidden wherever Name-Givers can be found. Still, I have found myself hitting an obstacle, so to speak, in my research of the object. I lack a Key Knowledge to my understanding of the Astral Sextant. Until I discover this knowledge, my ability to manipulate the threads to the device will remain limited. I shall clear my thoughts and head to "the Painted Tart." The T'skrang and Windling headed there earlier before all of the excitement when we arrived in town, and I do believe they must have some most excellent cakes there, as I see long lines of men filing in at all hours. Addendum: "The Painted Tart" is not a bakery. I shall avoid that place in the future.
