abstract
  • Cyclone Laurel of 2023 was a very destructive and deadly cyclone, which tore through Reunion and Madagascar as a category 1 cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. From the time of entering Reunion's territory, until it dissipated over Zambia, the cyclone and its remnants were responsible for 52 deaths, and leaving 105 others injured, who are now presumed dead after many months of searching for the missing persons. An area of disturbed weather was first noted by the Meteo France Reunion Office on March 17th, which rapidly consolidated to become Tropical Depression, before slowly strengthening to become a cyclone before hitting Reunion and Madagascar a few days later. Laurel eventually entered the Mozambique Channel, where it weakened to a tropical storm begore hitting Juan De Nova and weakening to a depression, making landfall in Tanzania near Lindi, becoming extratropical and trawling over areas of Malawi and Zambia before finally losing its identity on March 26th, having wrecked millions of Dollars worth of crops as a result of its passage. In addition, 2.33 million tons of crops were lost, and 4.1 million people left homeless by the storm. Cyclone Laurel was given the name Denise, after Filipina actress/singer Denise Laurel moved to one of the affected countries after Manila was destroyed by Super Typhoon Mirinae.
