abstract	The Virginian Civil War was a internal conflict fought between the government of the Commonwealth of Virginia on one end, and pro-slavery faction proclaiming themselves as the rightful government of the new United Republic of Virginia. The conflict erupted primarily over the issue of slavery within Virginia. The move towards war was escalated with the election of Abraham Lincoln (primarily by non-slavery counties of Virginia). By 1861, several southern counties established the United Republic of Virginia, and proclaimed themselves the rightful government of the nation. The war was primarily fought in eastern Virginia, with minor fighting west of the Appalachian Mountains. The war ended in early 1863 with a Commonwealth victory, with elements of the United Republican government fleeing to Carolina.
