Chosen 100th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, this speedy scorer did noy have the defensive skills to stock in the National Hockey League. The Canadiens called him up for one game in the 1979-80 playoffs and then for another in the 1980-81 NHL season. Otherwise he played for the AHL's Nova Scotia Voyageurs. Joly publicly criticized the Canadiens and Guy Lafleur during the 1982-83 season which sealed his fate in the NHL. He played part of 1983-84 with HC Gardena in Italy and with the Maine Mariners. After sitting out the 1984-85 season, Joly played a few games for the Indianapolis Checkers in 1985-86 and then retired.
