The Tyranids are a nomadic extra-galactic race comprising many genetically engineered forms created from harvested bio-mass. They are known as the "Great Devourer" and pose a severe threat not only to the Imperium of Man, but the entire galactic community. They seek to consume all in their path, draining all planets of any possible resource with horrific speed and power. They are comparable in terms of their voracity, and in some cases, appearance, to the Xenomorphs, as well as the Zerg (the latter of which they inspired).

  • Tyranids are an extragalactic alien race, whose sole purpose is the consumption of all forms of genetic and biological material in order to evolve and reproduce. Tyranids are a nomadic alien race comprising many genetically engineered forms created from harvested bio-mass. They are known as the "Great Devourer" and also "Shadow In The Warp" after the effect of their hive mind on FTL travel and communications. They seek to consume all in their path, draining all planets of every resource. The Tyranids are actually an extragalactic species, born somewhere beyond the void that separates the galaxies of the Local Group. Tyranid Hive Fleets travel through space by using gigantic, organisms genetically engineered to travel through a vacuum known as Hive Ships, which move in groups which can be likened to very large locust swarms. Hive Fleets consist of millions of biomechanical craft, each serving as host to an untold number of symbiotic organisms. Typically, Tyranid Hive Fleets move in formations known as Tendrils, migrating to nearby inhabited planets after consuming all the biological and organic material on a recently invaded planet and breeding, often reproducing many times their original number. Hive Fleets travel with superluminal speed by using the specialized psychic power of selectively evolved Hive Ships, they manipulate the gravity fields of star system to achieve faster-than-light travel. The massive Warp presence of the Tyranid Hive Mind, however, manifests itself in that realm through the Shadow in the Warp phenomenon. The current collection of Tyranid Hive Fleets have migrated to the Milky Way Galaxy, presumably after overpopulating or overfeeding in other nearby galaxies of the Local Group. Given that each Tyranid Hive Fleet has approached the Milky Way from a different direction, this may imply that the Tyranids have consumed a disturbingly large number of nearby galaxies.
  • The Tyranids are an extragalactic race of insect-like aliens that exist only to consume all consumable things in order to reproduce and evolve. Tyranids are one of, possibly even, the greatest threat to the inhabitants of the Warhammer universe. They consume entire planets and once they have finished all that is left is a barren, airless rock where it is impossible to comprehend that life once existed on this now Emperor-forsaken planet. The bioengineering capabilities of the Tyranid race far exceeds that of any known race. Tyranids will often develop new strains of creatures in order to combat a single threat. It is highly unlikely that all the strains of Tyranids have been witnessed by Imperial forces. Breeding an almost endless swarm of lesser Tyranids capable of intelligent thought would be incredibly taxing to the biomass levels of the Tyranid swarms. To counter this problem all lesser Tyranids are developed with only a very basic level of intelligence and are instead led by larger creatures. The creatures are tasked with instructing their lesser brethren through psychic synapses. A large force of these creatures will always be present in any Tyranid invasion much like the Imperial guard might field a large number of commissars, sergeants or another higher ranking officer. Imperial forces have, however learned to 'shoot the big ones' in an attempt to strip the Tyranid horde of its leadership and through this, its intelligence.
  • The tyranids work as a swarm, with the sheer strength of the horde being enough to overwhelm most forces. The amount of close combat specialists in a Tyranid army can destroy most armies by themselves. However, if a target is too heavily armoured, the tyranids will adapt, using psychic artillery platforms known as zoanthropes. Tyranids first begin the invasion of a world by sending in infiltators known as genestealers and lictors. The latter is a camouflage specialist, equipped with scything talons and rending claws to assassinate high priority targets. Genestealers are pack animals that can implant eggs into unwilling targets that take over their bodies, thus creating hybrids. These hybrids then begin casting a psychic beacon to the rest of the hive fleet, all but dooming the planet to be eaten. When the swarm arrives, they first send down horde upon horde of terma and hormagaunts, and the tervigons that spawn them. As support, they also send gargoyles, which are flying termaguants, and raveners. To command these numerous beasts, instead of a large synapse creature, they instead send Tyranid Warriors, medium sized beasts with a wide range of weaponry to choose from. To undermine the enemy's effort to repel them, the Tyranids will introduce toxic spores into the atmosphere which invade all non-Tyranid organisms and begin to digest them from within. As the hordes of gaunts do their work, they will inevitably reach locations where resistance is simply too much even for their near-unlimited numbers. Thus the hive fleet begins using beasts known as carnifexes, zoanthropes, biovores and the dreaded bio-titans, the Tyranid Tervigon. Carnifexes are the Tyranid's tank analogue, large, lumbering, well armoured beasts that can take a beating and dish one out. They have the largest range of weaponry and bio-enhancements recorded, ranging from crushing claws to scything talons, to barbed stranglers to spore mine launchers. Zoanthropes are purely psychic creatures, lacking limbs to move around they levitate using their psychic powers. They are normally pressed into an anti-armour role, their massive psychic power turned on the mere steel of the Imperium's tanks. Biovores are Tyranid artillery, shelling emplacements with spore mines, which explode and begin digesting all those in contact with them. Tervigons are giant raveners, large enough to swallow Chimera APCs whole. Tervigons are only seen where the fighting is harshest and normally spell the end for whatever resistance is on the planet. In the last stages of a planet's demise, the Tyranid forces will begin to gorge themselves on the fallen, eating anything living. They then move to large digesting pools, into which they throw themselves, commanded by the Hive Mind. Here they are broken down into their base components, and are later taken up by mycetic spires, to be returned to the fleet's hive ships. Here, the DNA of the resistance is analysed for stronger adaptions, which are then added to the fleet.

Later that year the first Hive Fleet, known as Hive Fleet Behemoth, moved into orbit above Macragge, centre of Ultramar, the Ultramarines homeworld.
