  • Cyrene, officially the Republic of Cyrene and Tripoli, is a North African republic bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, the east by Egypt, the west by Algeria, and the south by Mali. Cyrene has a population of about seven million people, most of whom live along its coast in cities such as Benghazi, Tripoli and Misrata. Due to several civil wars during the 20th century, Cyrene is notorious as one of the most unstable countries in the Middle East. The instability suffered in Cyrene, which has one of the largest oil reserves in the world, has resulted in significant investment and pitting of interests between NATO and the CIC in its various conflicts, the most recent of which occurred in the winter and spring of 1998. The current regime has proven to be the most stable to come in to power, as no major armed resistance has surfaced yet.
