The conflict is a runoff of the Syrian Civil War and the fight against the terrorist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The Golden Dawn, the sole political party of the federation, allegedly invited the group to train its militants on the island of Tilos in exchange for a large sum of money. The deal was released on Wikileaks through an unknown source. On 1 December 2015, the United States declared the federation a terrorist sponsor. The federation immediately severed relations with the US in response. Many European countries, including the United Kingdom and France followed and cut diplomatic ties with the federation.

  • The conflict is a runoff of the Syrian Civil War and the fight against the terrorist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The Golden Dawn, the sole political party of the federation, allegedly invited the group to train its militants on the island of Tilos in exchange for a large sum of money. The federation immediately severed relations with the US in response. Many European countries, including the United Kingdom and France followed and cut diplomatic ties with the federation. On 5 December 2015, the federation officially announced its recognition of the Islamic State as a sovereign country; to date, it is the only country to do so. The day after, the United States, already refusing to recognize the federation as a legitimate country, declared the federation a terrorist organization. On 11 December 2015, the Russian Federation recognized the federation as a legitimate nation state and said "the Russian government is fully supportive of the Aegean government and will provide logistics and medical support to the federation." A number of political activists and experts criticize the operation, stating the lack of information available and the fact that the Aegean Federation is officially racist towards non-Greeks as reasons the document released from Wikileaks is a fraud.
