The American Wizarding Confederation conducts a regular census of the American magical population. The census likely lists witches and wizards by their so-called "blood-status," as an organization exists for the express purpose of abolishing the practice. The first year that the census was taken is not yet known, but the topic is covered in eighth-grade American Wizarding History at the Charmbridge Academy. It is possible to unregister from the Census, thereby declaring oneself "no longer part of the wizarding world," as Hilary Dearborn and her husband did after eloping.
