| - Though hilly in the west and south-east, Blackwood is primarily a flat swamp. The region is particularly lush with violet-flowered bushes, white oak, and bald cypress tress. Visibility is often poor due to fog, mist, and heavy rains. Both the Yellow and the Green Road pass through Blackwood, one on either side of the Niben. Despite the region's low altitude and numerous standing pools of water, the only river is the Panther, which marks Blackwood's northern border with the Nibenay Valley and Basin.

- Blackwood was a type of tree. It was suggested that blackwood was closely related to bloodwood, calling it "black bloodwood". Blackwood trees were sacred to the Tiste Edur of the Lether continent. There were once whole forests of blackwood in the realm of Kurald Galain, but all were used to fuel the great forges during the Tiste civil war.

- Blackwood is a slam-seeking convention for asking aces. It is used to avoid bidding slam contracts when two aces are missing for a small slam or an ace is missing for grand slam. Typically it is invoked with a bid of 4NT when a suit fit has already been identified. More generally, any jump bid of 4NT is Blackwood unless it follows directly a natural notrump bid by partner. There are, of course, exceptions.
