Founded in the year 739 (14 BC), the Maritime Alps were one of the Provinces established in the Alps. It was a Kingdom prior to its annexation and held a certain level of autonomy and self-governance even after its annexation. However, after the accension of Emperor Nero, all the Senatorial Provinces had to become a Republic with the same system of Government as the City of Rome. This was the start of the Governors of the Maritime Alps and also the Senate of this Province. Despite this, the remaining list of Governors of this Province only dates to the Emperor Carolus.
