abstract
| - The World Health Organization has many Millennium Development Goals, one of which is reducing ill-health by year 2015. The process of reaching this goal may involve medical technology transfer from industrialized to developing nations. This presentation will discuss some of the STS, health policy and world development literature on international medical technology transfer . Key points will include a definition of IMTT, a discussion of the effects of socioeconomics and culture, and also, the utility of local empowerment and participation. Technology transfer frameworks that can be used at an organizational level to initiate IMTT will be presented. A framework to evaluate successful IMTT for sustainable development will be suggested. Finally, the presentation will conclude by briefly presenting published examples of IMTT being used for sustainable development, and identifying current diseases and countries that may benefit from IMTT as an intervention.
