The climate is subtropical in the north, gradually giving way to a more temperate interior, with a semiarid climate in the south east and Alpine in the mountainous south west. The highest point is the 8,5000ft Mount Brabançonne in the south western Brabançonne Mountains. The central and south western pampas are prone to violent thunder storms and resultant flash floods.
