The Trial of the Hunt is a rite performed by young Kartanin, roughly at twelve standard years of age. Until its completion, a Kartanin is part of the Untested. Having gained no honour and spilled no blood for house and family, they are yet unworthy of bearing a name. Should they succeed - and not all do - they choose a first name, and are considered adults. Their family then prepares them for one year, before they start training with the Kartanin Warfleet.

The clansman sets out on a hunt and tracks down a mighty beast. They kill the beast, and make a mask out of its skin. To pass the trial, they must return to the clan with the newly created mask. The clan shaman would then contact the spirit of the slain animal and ask it to bestow its blessing and grant its strength to the hunter. If a blessing is given, the hunter is elevated to a higher position within the clan, and would carry the mask wherever they go. If the slain animal refuse to bless the hunter, or the hunter does not follow the rules honourably, they are exiled to wander the wilderness for three days and think over their
