| - On 2 February 2006, Fr. General Kolvenbach informed the members of the Society of Jesus that, with the consent of Pope Benedict XVI, he intended to step down in 2008, the year he would turn 80. Kolvenbach was only the second to resign the office which is usually held for life. Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach was elected as 28th Jesuit General in September 1983 by delegates of GC33. Pope John Paul II allowed appointed Fr. General Paolo Dezza call for GC33, which marked the return to the independant governance of the Society of Jesus following a brief period when continued independant governance was uncertain. In the years prior to GC33, marxist allegiences and activity among Society of Jesus members had mounted around the globe. As the Society leadership appeared to became increasingly bound to anti-capitalist socio-political agendas, their fourth vow, that of allegience to the Pope of Rome was tested. In 1981 Pope John II removed Jesuit General Pedro Arrupe from office (as well as his chosen successor, Vincent O'Keefe) and appointed Paolo Dezza to the office. The election of Kolvenbach however, did not seem to solve the underlying areas of contention that some believed to be a Jesuit war against the papacy.
