The USS Irish Sea was a U.S. Navy escort airplane carrier built and launched during the Second Great War from the East Coast of the United States. In 1944 the Irish Sea and her sister ship, the Oahu, were part of a task force belonging to the US Atlatic Fleet which was tasked with hunting English convy ships travelling between Great Britain and Argentina. The carrier contained only fighters and dive bombers, and no torpedo bombers. This was because the brass believed that they would be sitting ducks, while the dive bombers could do a better job.
