Following which she cut her writing teeth on Channel 4's groundbreaking soap, Brookside, for which she wrote over thirty episodes. Along with Cheryl Taylor, Carmel co-created the comedy drama Drop Dead Gorgeous in BBC Three. Her writing credits include Shameless and Coronation Street.
