The song was "Hello, Sammy!" sung to the tune of "Hello, Dolly!", Channing's signature Broadway song. Channing has received three Tony Awards: in 1964, as Best Actress (Musical) for Hello, Dolly!; in 1968, a Special Award; and in 1995, a Lifetime Achievement Award.

She attended high school in San Francisco and later worked as a model in Los Angeles. She attended prestigious Bennington College in Vermont, where she majored in drama and dance, and supplemented her work by taking parts in nearby Pocono Resort area. She initially made her mark on Broadway in "Gentleman Prefer Blondes", playing Lorelei Lee.

A city editor at the Seattle Star, her father took a job in San Francisco and the family moved when Channing was two weeks old. Her father later became a successful Christian Sciencepractitioner, editor, and teacher. She attended Aptos Middle School and Lowell High School in San Francisco. At Lowell, Channing was a member of its famed Lowell Forensic Society, the nation's oldest high-school debate team.
