- Organic Chemistry was a general course taught at Starfleet Academy during the 24th century, covering the chemistry of carbon compounds. Because of his involvement with a female acquaintance whose initials were "A.F.", Jean-Luc Picard failed this course. (TNG: "The Game" )
- Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, reactions, composition and preparation of compounds consisting of Carbon (and Hydrogen). These compounds may contain other elements, including oxygen, nitrogen, the halogens and sulphur. Most of all the compounds discovered in the world today are organic, and there are so many due to the number of bonds Carbon can form - 4. This means that very long chains of carbon compounds can form (e.g. octane).

Then in the 1920's it was discovered that drugs could be synthesized with organic reactions. Research skyrocketed since chemists could intoxicate themselves with the products of their experiments, providing added incentive. More recently, organic chemistry is known for creating a thriving amateur chemist community with laboratories springing up in basements and abandoned warehouses everywhere, manufacturing homemade products for recreation and urban renewal.
