GM: Cid is still a mess, right. ** Richard hopes there are some healing pots in Cid's pack ** ** Connell huddles next to a building and concentrates for a minute. (( Heal Plant. [3d6.skill(17,-5)] => [5,5,3] = 13 vs (12) or less Failure! by 1 )) ** Richard: "can you two pour some healing pots down them while I rest up for some more healing?" ** Connell shakes his head, trying to concentrate. He tries it again. (( [3d6.skill(17,-5)] => [3,6,5] = 14 vs (12) or less Failure! by 2 )) ** GM: Uhm... you almost certainly fall unconscious, Connell, as there is really no way to make 60 HT checks. GM: Uhm, 120. GM: Whatever. You're out. Connell: Er. Gooood point. Connell: Connell lies happily asleep in blood loss land. Richard: sap loss? ** Richard looks tired ** Mrugnak: Erk. Um. GM: People with 2 minute fatigue recovery times recover 1 fatigue. Mrugnak: Can Ted heal anyone? GM: Incidently, 2 minutes pass. GM: I think Richard knows healing spells...? Richard: I can Richard: but not so well when at 2 FP, hence the rest time Mrugnak: Fair 'nuff. Mrugnak: Mrugnak gets his potion of Major Healing out and dumps it on Connell. Mrugnak: Fix the healer, healer fixes everyone else! Mrugnak: I hope. GM: Connell heals [2d6] => [6,6] = (12)! Mrugnak: Scaled for current HP? Cid: ^^ Mrugnak: (not sure how many he has in Tiger form) GM: Current HP is still 17, so scale is x1. GM: It's enough to get him up, though he's still in bad shape. ** Richard hopes connell knows great healing ** Mrugnak: He knows Heal Plant and Form of Wooden Tiger? Connell: (( I do, but I don't actually have the FP required to cast it. :P )) Mrugnak: (Do you have Plant Form Other? The bush healing trick is awesome) Kevin: Can we shorten this by saying 'we take about an hour to rest and heal', and making the appropriate rolls? Connell: (( I do have Plant Form Other, actually... GM: Certainly. GM: What permanent resources are you using up? Connell: Heal Plant to fix self: [3d6.skill(17,-5)] => [5,1,2] = 8 vs (12) or less Success! by 4 Cid: What about those two enemies still active south of us? Mrugnak: I believe they're fleeing. Richard: how hurt is connell now? Connell: Should be in perfect condition, if Heal Plant went off. Richard: ah Ayake: If Plant Form Other + Heal Plant actually works, then I think many of us are spending at least a little time as a bush, and then we're down only Mrugnak's Potion of Major Healing. GM: My notes say that Connell has had 1 Major Healing, Richard has had 1, and Cid has had 2. GM: Let me check. Ayake: Ayake has also had one, in addition to the one that didn't count as a healing use due to a critsuccess. Richard: I've done one to connell and two to Cid Mrugnak: Mrugnak will be VERY confused by his time as a bush. GM: I just merge them altogether; tracking healings by caster is a mug's game. Richard: should track those by caster for the penalties (I'm not gonna do Cid a lot more good) GM: It takes Connell 25 minutes to heal each one of you with that trick, but he can do it, sure. Richard: I'll be able to lend him some strength to speed it up ** Connell turns back into a faun, and goes to people and turns them into pumpkins briefly before fixing them. ** GM: Assuming nobody has any weird Magic resistances or anything, you're all healed in a little more than an hour. Richard: I will minor myself since I'm not down much Cid: Fully? GM: You're down 7 by my count, but whatever. GM: Heal Plant is nominally unlimited in its effects. Connell: Do you want me to roll, or shall we assume I don't critfail? GM: No need to roll, you have plenty of time. Cid: No point in critfailing outside of combat GM: I'm going to treat Heal Plant like Great Healing, so single use per day. GM: (per person, of course!) Mrugnak: Well, summoning a demon could mean we're in combat again. Connell: Works for me. GM: Failing would mean people don't get healed. ** Connell heals Cid last, nudging the fixed pumpkin and turning it back into a paladin. "Hello, new guy." ** GM: But really, only Ayake and Cid are critical. Mrugnak can be Majored Healed with little difficulty and Richard could take a couple of stolen potions. Ayake: ((Might be better to just land Major Healing on me. I'm not even critical - a Major Healing from Richard for 12 HP and a minor for 2 more puts me at full.)) Richard: (( just saying it takes 25 mins works for me )) GM: You need to rest for 30-50 minutes just to recover the fatigue, anyway. Cid: I could maybe, just maybe, take my chances with a Prayer of Restoration GM: What's that, Cid? Cid: If my roll succeeds, everyone gets restored to max HP and FP Ayake: ...? Cid: The die decides if my deity will respond Connell: Trust me, we don't need to bring gods into this. You have a faun. Richard: I'll recover all mine in 26 mins, and can lend out some from my energy reseve in that time Mrugnak: You mean praying for help? GM: Does it now? Cid: For a miracle, yes Richard: save that for the castle! Richard: "So, now we get to try and take the castle?" Ayake: Cid, you're aware that praying for Divine Intervention is 1) near-impossible, and 2) The GM decides what actual effect the divine intervention has, and 3) The Gods help those who help themselves, and you have perfectly non-divine-intervention options available? Connell: "Aren't we here for leprechaun gold? I'm happy to let the orcs stay in their castle." Ayake: Just saying. Ayake: "We're also here to uncover whatever fell from the sky." Richard: "My impression was it's in the castle, unless there is another castle in the valley I have missed" Ayake: "And if I know orcs, they'll have it in that castle." Connell: "Hmn. Well - is there a way to sneak in?" He glances over at Mrugnak, "I could turn Mrugnak into a pumpkin and we could carry him in." Mrugnak: "noooo" Mrugnak: "Mrugnak warrior! Not fruit!" Connell: "Gourds not your favourite? Could do a rosebush." Mrugnak: "Veggie." Mrugnak: "Thing." ** Richard looks to see if they cleared the ground around the castle like they did their wall ** GM: It's hard to make out the castle in the darkness, but it appears to be on some kind of raised plateau with a deep and wide moat around that. GM: The plateau walls are not very steep, though, and you're not sure if the castle is in good repair. ** Richard looks for the darkness generator ** Cid: *didn't get a clear statement on whether everyone got healed up yet* Ayake: You got turned into a pumpkin and then healed, Cid. whispering to Cid, As a foxman, you can clearly see that the castle is in poor repair, with a lot of the stones crumbling. Goblin sentries line the walls. GM: Everyone is healed, tanned, and rested after an hour. Cid: Argh I messed up my figure Richard: "Well, I don't see how we can sneak in since the have a big moat and are on high alert" Ayake: "So, same plan as the wall, then?" Connell: "Wasn't that a terrible plan at the wall?" Ayake: "It worked." Richard: during the hour I make some boffer arrow so the rules will not scream in protest next time I heal someone GM: There is a large stream of soldiers moving out of the castle and heading toward the southwest side of the valley. GM: Uhm, okay. Richard: or I get Berkun to make them :) GM: Okay, that works. Cid: I walk over to pick up my backpack again, then let my gaze rest southbound GM: Uhm. GM: Do either you have any arrows that aren't meteoric or don't come from cornucopia quivers? Richard: hmm, can we see what they are heading to? the mine? Cid: (and my halo got messed up) Ayake: As I recall, Berkun is carrying several fine, balanced, magic penetrating arrows that aren't meteoric. Richard: we can send him out for some goblin ones, I have some but they are fine ** Mrugnak fetches his own backpack from next to the hut and sits on top of the wall Richard created. ** GM: Yes, Berkun isn't sacrificing them for boffer arrows. Richard: IIRC there are some dead goblin archers nearby GM: Okay, there are some goblin arrows around, Berkun cuts the heads off of them. Ayake: Yeah, wolfriders shot at me. Connell: "So, me and Mrugnak will make an aerial assault again, Ayake can just... walk up the wall. What about the other three?" He looks at Richard, Cid, and Berkun. ** Ayake peers southwest. "What do you suppose is down there that they'd be sending troops to protect?" ** Cid: "That battle was a perilous one, but we prevailed nonetheless. Victory to the righteous." I sheathe my broadsword as I speak. ** Ayake eyes Cid. "'We'?" ** Richard: "I remember seeing a mine and some other villages, I bet the mine" Cid: "What?" I look briefly clueless, "For the better or worse, I'm stuck with you owing to those Elder Things that so inconveniently intruded on my training." Richard: "I got here via a random teleport as well, maybe the gods are playing again" Richard: where was the mine we saw on the way in? Connell: "Okay, which one of us is the walking magic anchor? Mrugnak, is it you? Have you been bending space-time again?" Cid: "A test of valor by the gods? I'll happily take it and prove the gods wrong." Mrugnak: "Mrugnak bend bars..." Mrugnak: "Uh..." GM: Oh, as a note, the foxman paladin you're dealing with - Cid SilverWing - is not the famous Foxman Paladin Scydd Silverblade. Who you thought Cid was originally. Mrugnak: "An bones, but den bones go snap." GM: Cid is just some guy. Mrugnak: 'es a puppy! Ayake: "Stuck with us? Hm. Well. By all means, don't let us simple peasants hold you back - next time we face an army, you can charge them and get cut down all on your own without our help." He frowns. "I can't imagine they'd see the mine as more valuable than the castle. Unless there was something really valuable there. So, to the mine!" GM: Now that you've had some time to deal with him and get his story, you realize the difference. Ayake: ((I have logic skills.) GM: The mine you passed is to the west, about 300 yards. Cid: "No need to be rude." I snort at Ayake, "It wasn't my choice to be thrown into battle on such short notice." Connell: "Shouldn't we go to the castle? They've obviously expecting us at the mine." Richard: hmm, so they're not heading for the mine? GM: The troops leaving the castle look like goblins, and definitely include some of the survivors of the battle. GM: They do not look in good shape. GM: No, they're moving towards the wall on the far side of the valley. Ayake: "Getting their wounded out of the way, perhaps." Connell: "Probaby can't afford to feed them all>" Mrugnak: (( Huh. More of a "Helms Deep" sort of thing. )) Ayake: "I agree with the faun. Onward, to the castle." Richard: hmm, if they expect a siege that makes sense Connell: "Five people doesn't count as a siege." Richard: "Eh, maybe we do" Cid: "How are your provisions?" I recount the equipment in my pack, "I'm ill-equipped for adventuring as of now." Mrugnak: "Mrugnak kill thing, eat it." Connell: "If we approach from one side, I could try setting fire to the other side of the castle. That could be interesting." Richard: "we're on light rations now, we have more in a camp outside the valley, lets not stay here long enough for it to matter" Richard: can we see into the courtyard of the castle from here? Richard: "I can light some fires with arrows if need be" GM: You certainly can't. It's too dark. GM: You have line of sight to it, if that's what you want. Cid: "I carry a torch with me for times like this." Cid: (and shouldn't the time of day reflect on the map brightness?) Ayake: "So. I'll scale the walls. Connell, Richard, and Mrugnak will fly. Richard, how difficult is it for you to make him fly?" He gestures at Cid. Richard: "I'm tempted to fly up and light it on fire just so I can see it" Mrugnak: "Mrugnak have light hat!" ** Mrugnak has, specifically, a helmet lamp. ** Connell: "Probably safer if I do it, if you fire flaming arrows they'll know your position. I can just turn into a flaming bird and flit around burning thatch and stuff." Ayake: ((It's supernaturally dark. All light sources are dimmed, and it's generally hard to see.)) Richard: "Not hard, just tiring, especially so many" GM: You're not sure, but the moat looks to be large. GM: Like many moats are. GM: (like, more than 60' across and probably 30+ feet deep). Connell: "So - Ayake, what do you think? A little flame?" Ayake: "Fire is an effective distraction. I do wonder about that moat." Ayake: ((Quickly looking up to see just how hard it is for me to walk on water.)) Richard: "Connell, can you make anyone else fly our just yourself?" Cid: "That reminds me, we haven't even introduced each others yet." ** Mrugnak thumps himself on the breastplate. "Dis Mrugnak." ** Richard: "I'm Richard Hammond, mage and archer" Connell: "Just me. It's more a matter of turning into a bird than magic." Connell: "Huh?" He looks around at Cid, "Oh, I'm Connell. Nice to meet you?" Ayake: "I don't think I can walk across that moat. Hm." Berkun: "Berkun the Wolf, outworlder." Cid: "I'm Cid SilverWing." I stand at attention and bring my right hand to chest level, at my heart, left hand behind my back in what looks like a very foreign salute, "Fox Paladin of The Light." ** Ayake ignores Cid pointedly. ** Cid: "Seeing as how I'm new here." I bring my arms back down, "Although this darkness most certainly doesn't look natural, does anyone know where I've landed?" Richard: so, I would need to get myself and three others flying then? Richard: "The shrouded valley" Richard: "Ayake, you would need to be flying as well then?" Cid: "Hmph, fitting name." I look around, as though trying to observe other oddities of the realm. Ayake: "Maybe. I'm thinking." Narrator: Cid takes in the sights easily: a wide valley, surrounded by a tall wall with many towers. A single gate opens to the outside world to the southwest. Small goblin villages sprout like mushrooms through the valley, white smoke curling up from their chimneys. Roads connect the villages to each other, and run down in long spurs to the castle in the center of the valley. Ayake: "Mrugnak, you're strong, right?" Narrator: All the vegetation is sparse and sickly. The lone exception is a few acres of wildly overgrown tangles, inexplicably healthy though heavily overgrown with mushrooms. Richard: well, might as well get the flight out of the way now so I can recover from it while we plan ** Mrugnak flexes proudly. "Mrugnak strong! Fight! Hit! Lift! Smash!" ** Richard: Flight shouting, gestures, extra timex10, -3FP [3d6.skill(20,+5-8)] => [5,1,6] = 12 vs (17) or less Success! by 5 for 2 FP on me Ayake: "Lift, yes. Richard: -2? thought it was -1 GM: We house ruled it to -2 for external spells. GM: To limit the ability of the mage to cast spells to solve all the problems. GM: =) GM: I mean, your spell succeeded. Carry on! Richard: OK, well, no change yet since I did me first GM: Great. Richard: Flight shouting, gestures, extra timex10, -3FP [3d6.skill(20,+5-8-3)] => [3,1,4] = 8 vs (14) or less Success! by 6 for 2 FP on Berkun Richard: and I rest 6 mins GM: Flight costs 5, -3, x2 is 6 FP. Cid: "So where shall we go next?" Richard: I use equal FP and EN, then regain one of each every 2 mins Connell: I'll go make a distraction, then. He stands away from the others, spreads his arms, and chants. (( Lightning Falcon. Shouting and waving. [3d6.skill(17,+3)] => [4,5,6] = 15 vs (20) or less Success! by 5 )) Richard: "I'll have to drop the flight spells once we are there or else I won't be casting anything else so be ready" ** Connell collapses into a falcon made of crackling lightning. He gives a loud raptor cry, and spirals up into the sky, making a big loop as he heads towards the castle. ** Cid: Anything to be found on the numerous corpses littering the village? GM: Note: the castle is a mile or so away. Richard: "We should go way up so they can't plink at us with arrows on the way in, and stick together so we don't get lost in the darkness" GM: On the corpses: crude but large axes, various hand axes and short swords, a lot of iron plate armor, well-made swords, and medium shields. GM: Like, 35 or more of the each of those items. Cid: Search/Observation roll - Any headgear that remotely resembles legionnary helmets? ** Ayake collects a half-dozen hand axes, strapping them onto his Delver's Webbing, and one medium shield to strap to his back. Then he vaults onto Mrugnak's shoulder and grins. "Let's go." ** GM: The castle is 400 yards to the southeast on the new map. Ayake: ((I can throw ANYTHING.)) ** Mrugnak switches to the new map! ** Connell: Connell is looping around to the far side of the castle and looking for anything remotely flammable - thatch roofs, piles of logs, hay, whatever. He'll fly in windows and sit on the roofbeams if he has to. Mrugnak: I believe the good ship Hindentaur is taking off and following Richard ** Richard flies up and toward the castle at a flying 'walk' so as not to arrive there tired ** GM: The castle roof is slate and tile. GM: There are many goblins on the roof, shouting at the bird and taking cover as best they can. Narrator: The old castle of the Shrouded Vale is oddly shaped, roughly hexagonal with a keep on the north side. The walls are very thick, and topped with parapets. Narrator: There is a gate house facing south on the wall. Narrator: Part of the west wall has collapsed and is only partially repaired. Some wooden planks bridge the wide chasm. GM: Connell, you don't see anything obvious to set on fire... except the wood flanks on the west side, and scaffolding for the repairs. GM: The goblin archers are shooting at you, but that's really a minor distraction at this point. Connell: We'll start with the scaffolding, then. If I see a window or arrowslit with no archers in it, I'll fly inside and look for supports. GM: As you settle on the scaffolding, about 20 goblins hiding in the ruins charge at you with swords. GM: Can they hurt you? Ayake: I think he's Diffuse. Connell: I've got DR 2 and I'm Diffuse so... probably. GM: He can still be hurt, just very very slowly. GM: Are you hanging around or what? Connell: I'll take off. Looking for somewhere less goblin-infested. Connell: While flying I'm going at move 24 so I'm guessing the archers just plain miss? GM: I'm assuming your dodging them right now, maybe taking minor hits because arrows go through lightning pretty well. Cid: *a little lost at the moment* GM: On the other hand, having 20 goblins hit you with swords for a few rounds might actually hurt. GM: So what are you doing? GM: Oh, you took off, sorry, my bad. Connell: Mostly looking for an unoccupied tower or something. GM: From the central courtyard, you can see various buildings. Most seem occupied by somebody. GM: The goblins are chasing after you, but that's a minor detail. GM: There seems to be a throne on the first floor of the keep to your north. Connell: I'll fly in there and take a look around Narrator: As Connell's lightning falcon form swoops between the keep and the gatehouse, hundreds of arrows arc into the sky. Goblin archers continuously fire at him. ** Richard moves in more and up as well, paying attention to the archer positions and ranges ** GM: There's a open balcony on the second floor. Multiple large ogres start throwing rocks at you. Also, there are several orc knights in here. Cid: I take it I just walk forwards? GM: Hang a second. Ayake: Cid: We had flight spells cast on us. Ogre: Rocks are thrown! GM: Oh, you recognize the beams - they look similar to the ones you saw on the Night of Conjuction of Dark Stars. GM: The orcs are preparing to blast you again. Are you hanging around or what? Connell: Nope, flying the heck out of there. Richard: maintain spell on Berkun's flight -1 FP, loud, elaborate gestures, extra time [3d6.skill(18,+4-5-2)] => [5,3,6] = 14 vs (15) or less Success! by 1 for 0 FP, takes 4 sec GM: You get out of their. Connell: Are the goblins likely to have huge supplies or arrows or will flitting around making them waste ammo actually do anything? GM: Huge supplies of arrows at their own keep, yes. GM: Like, 1000 per goblins, most likely. Richard: (( due to brain fart we are gonna have to pause the flying charge while I get Cid in on it )) Richard: (( unless we decide to not go in getting beamed by orcs )) Ayake: ((We can handle it.)) Connell: (( I'm sort of out of ideas. There's no inch of that place unguarded so settings fires is a no. )) Ayake: ((Direct assault it is!)) Richard: the walls are all one height, no towers or anything? GM: The walls are 30' tall, above a 40' plateau, past the moat. GM: There are no towers, but the keep rises another 20' above the walls on the north side, and the gatehouse structure is 15' above the walls on the south. GM: Both of them have slanted tile roofs and no parapets. Richard: "how about we make for the keep roof?" Cid: "Anywhere that does not lead directly into the middle of their flanks." Richard: could we see where the beams and boulders were coming from? Mrugnak: (( afk briefly )) Richard: can connell talk as a lightning bird? GM: I don't know. Connell? Ayake: "We could come in through the keep roof. I am sure Mrugnak could open us a hole." Richard: "The trick will not be looking like pincushins after we get to it" Connell: (( I can't remember what we decided about that. I know I have a -5 penalty to spellcasting in animal forms. )) GM: Let me loo it up. GM: He can talk in animal forms. GM: He just doesn't have any fine manipulators. Mrugnak: (( bek. Depends on if you put "Cannot Speak" on your templates :) )) Richard: "I can get everyone flying but it will only last 8 minutes after I rest up" Ayake: "We should be able to use the roof's peak as cover. I don't see any way we're going to be able to use stealth, anyway." Richard: "OK, how do we fly there without ending up full of arrows?" ** Connell flaps around the others, keeping enough of a distance so he doesn't burn anyone. "The place is full of goblins, and the main keep has a bunch of ogres overlooking the area, which is full of orcs. And then can cast spells." ** Connell: (( they, they can cast spells Richard: I take it the walls are pretty much lined with arches with barrels of arrows? GM: Yes. Richard: archers* Richard: "where are the ogres, in the keep or on top of it?" Connell: "Inside, on a balcony." Cid: "Permit me time to think here..." Ayake: So it looks like coming in from the north, the only archers who can get at us would be guys at arrowslits, since there isn't any 'wall' to hang out on top of? GM: There's 40 archers on the north protrusions, that could easily shoot you. ** Richard finally notices the inset map ** GM: Was that a question? Mrugnak: (( yeah, I think we'll be fighting on that inset map )) Mrugnak: (( at least at some levels. )) Richard: (( nah, I was just observing it was there )) Ayake: Okay, so. Ayake: This week in the news: Castles are hard to attack. GM: "Prison." Richard: "I could probably clear them out with long range exploding arrows, as long as they are no more heavily armored than the others we have encountered Cid: "Most assuredly we cannot go through the front. How heavily guarded is the rooftop?" Ayake: "Only about 80 archers to shoot us down." Cid: "Not very welcome odds..." Richard: "only 40 if we approach from the north!" Mrugnak: "Dats... umm...." ** Mrugnak starts counting on his fingers, trying to figure out how many that is." ** Cid: "Very well. I propose we approach from the north and land on the rooftop." Ayake: "I said that already." Cid: "Then what are we waiting for?" Richard: "me to get you flying" Connell: "I could make it hail, but I don't know if that would bother them enough." Richard: that's plan B if they don't come up :) Richard: are we at the roof?
