Autarch is the official title of supreme political leadership within the Helghan Empire, similar to the titles of Führer in Nazi Germany and Duce in Fascist Italy. Like in every totalitarian state, the Autarch has full power over Helghast society, civilian and military, and all decisions made by the Autarch are absolute and ultimate. People who disobey orders given directly by the Autarch or refuse his rulership are often considered enemies of the state and marked for summary execution, either in an event or a simple kill-on-sight order. The title was created with the founding of the Helghast Empire, with its founder, Scolar Visari, being the first Autarch.

- Autarchs do not limit themselves to the single-minded specifications required of a single Path like most Eldar. The Autarch possesses an unparalleled strategic ability which far outshines an Exarch's obsession with only a singular facet of war. This enables an Autarch to lead a warhost that operates in perfect unison, with each component of the Eldar war machine functioning in perfect synchronicity. It is not only at the aspect of command that an Autarch excels, for they are consummate warriors as well, and often spearhead assaults, fighting an enemy army's leader in personal combat or contemptuously destroying war machines with ease. Autarchs are considered integral parts of Eldar culture due to their versatility and ability to lead the Eldar on the myriad paths of life and death.
- Autarchs are genetically enhanced humans, modified to exhibit greater intelligence, stamina and strength compared to baseline humans. They are as diverse as baseline humans, except for their golden eyes which are shared by all Autarchs. The average Autarch stand 190 cm tall and weighs 80 kg. He has golden eyes, but otherwise looks like a baseline human. Autarchs live in a militaristic society, which promotes the superiority of the Autarch sub-species, blind obedience, discipline and skill at arms.

Most Autarchs are ruthless, selfish creatures that care only for their own advancement in life - if necessary at the expense of others. They regard all non-Autarchs as lesser beings, and consider useless except as slave labour and - if necessary - cannon fodder. Autarchs live in a militaristic society, which promotes the superiority of the Autarch sub-species, blind obedience, discipline and skill at arms. An Autarch is physically and mentally similar to humans, but display a greater physical strength and endurance and greater intelligence. Psionic abilities manifest in one out of one hundred million. Autarch telepaths tend to use their abilities for their own advancement.
