After the disappointing performance of the GTB 1911 pattern, the design was again modified. The boats were enlarged, a third artillery mount was added, and the number of torpedo mounts was raised to six, two of them bow tubes able to fire straight ahead. The boats performed quite well at the front, and the following batches were based on this model. The boats were built at the Vulcan shipyard in Stettin and the Schichau shipyards in Elbing. From this class on, every type of German destroyer also carries a set of 24 mines.
