東方Project is a series of 2D (with 3D background) vertically-scrolling danmaku shooting games made by Team Shanghai Alice. The series takes place in Gensokyo, though there are a few instances where it goes to other places, with the Outside World being one of them. The main Touhou theme is Shintō, though other themes like Buddhism, Taoism, and Hindu is referenced/seen. The series has gained very much of popularity and is extremely well known around the world (much like OTL Mario, Sonic, Grand Theft Auto).

Some of the 東方Project characters can sometimes be seen (usually as Cameo appearances) in popular TV shows and films, like Doctor Who, Star Trek and Aikurushii etc. The 東方Project large music collection inspired many remixes (lots more then OTL), and is highly popular. It also is played on some music stations worldwide, and some of the signers/bands/etc. sometimes even based their music off the tracks.
