  • Antimony is a chemical element with symbol Sb (from ) and atomic number 51. A lustrous gray metalloid, it is found in nature mainly as the sulfide mineral stibnite (Sb2S3). Antimony compounds have been known since ancient times and were used for cosmetics; metallic antimony was also known, but it was erroneously identified as lead upon its discovery. It was first isolated by Vannoccio Biringuccio and described in 1540.
  • Antimony in its most common elemental form is a silvery white, brittle, fusible, crystalline solid that exhibits poor electrical and heat conductivity. It vaporizes at low temperatures. As a metalloid, antimony resembles both a metal and a non-metal in its appearance and in many of its physical properties. It does not chemically react as a metal. It reacts with oxidizing acids and halogens. Antimony and some of its alloys are unusual in that they expand on cooling. Antimony is geochemically categorized as a chalcophile, occurring with sulphur and the heavy metals lead, copper, and silver. Many antimony ores are sulphides, including stibnite (Sb2S3), pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), zinkenite, jamesonite, and boulangerite.757 Antimony pentasulfide is known, but is non-stoichiometric and contains only
