  • Lacquer is produced at apothecaries and used to create furniture and certain ships. Though it is listed in the game as a basic commodity, it must be created at player-owned shoppes or stalls; it is not found at any commodities market nor on merchant brigands.
  • Lacquer is a raw material found in Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom.
  • In a general sense, lacquer is a clear or coloured varnish that dries by solvent evaporation and often a curing process as well that produces a hard, durable finish, in any sheen level from ultra matte to high gloss and that can be further polished as required. While both lacquer and shellac are traditional finishes, lacquer is more durable than shellac.
  • In addition to Standard voyages, lacquer can be obtained through the following methods (see Special voyages): * Completing resource voyages from The Convict and The Exile * Completing the following joint voyages: * The Assassin and The Convict * The Exile and The Whaler * As a one time reward from the following: * 25 lacquer is a reward for completing The Assassin's storyline * 15 lacquer (and 10 Ancient bones) is a reward for completing The Exile's storyline * 50 lacquer (and 50 Plates) is a reward for completing the Hyu-Ji final mission
  • Lacquers come in different qualities (Lacquer +5: General, Lacquer +6: General, etc.) and are used to guarantee an item will not break during upgrading. The quality of Lacquer determines what level of item it is used on. When upgrading a +5 item to +6, you would use the Lacquer +5, not +6. Similarly, you should use Lacquer +6 if you are trying to upgrade from +6 to +7. Several things to keep in mind:

Players may also buy individual units in the form of ports lacquer packs from Boni on Waiko after the miniquest Impressing the Locals. These cost 2 taijitu and 1,000 chimes each, and are the only way to earn lacquer outside of Player-Owned Ports.
  • In a general sense, lacquer is a clear or coloured varnish that dries by solvent evaporation and often a curing process as well that produces a hard, durable finish, in any sheen level from ultra matte to high gloss and that can be further polished as required. The term lacquer originates from the Portuguese word for lac, a type of resin excreted from certain insects. Regardless, in modern usage, lac-based varnishes are referred to as shellac, while lacquer refers to other polymers dissolved in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as nitrocellulose, and later acrylic compounds dissolved in lacquer thinner, a mixture of several solvents typically containing butyl acetate and xylene or toluene. While both lacquer and shellac are traditional finishes, lacquer is more durable than shellac.

Similarly, you should use Lacquer +6 if you are trying to upgrade from +6 to +7. Several things to keep in mind: * While lacquers will prevent your item from breaking, if the upgrade does fail, the item will lose all previous upgrades. * "General" Lacquers will not work on Veteran-level items. * "Veteran" Lacquers will not work on any items below Veteran-level. * Enchantments will not be lost if the upgrade fails. We just tested this right now. Any enchantments that were on the weapon/armor before upgrading will not be removed if the item strengthening fails, but the lacquer keeps the item from being destroyed. - K2-Kanillius (link to source)
