The Alterman is a character that appears in Might and Magic: The Dreamwright, and is briefly mentioned in Might and Magic: The Shadowsmith. Diligence described him as a "squabby little man with carefully arranged ringlets of dyed crimson". As an alterman, he was fluent in altercant, the strange, singsong language used to transform the alters. The alterman was part of the caravan transporting Diligence to the Unseen Wall, and was responsible for the seven alters that Amonwelle had asked for. He shared a wagon with Grapple and the other yeofolk handler.

  • The Alterman is a character that appears in Might and Magic: The Dreamwright, and is briefly mentioned in Might and Magic: The Shadowsmith. The alters were quite eager to please him, and when he arrived to feed them, they surrounded him and yelped with joy as if he was a "benevolent god", but he showed little affection in return. He kept a long leather leash wrapped around his waist, which he fastened to the alters' collars when necessary. When he needed to speed them up, he used the end of the leash to lash them. Diligence often thought that his treatment of the creatures was far too cruel. He was considered somewhat lazy, and grumbled whenever the others needed him to get up from his chair and transform the alters. When Pomponderant disappeared from the caravan, Diligence had to bribe the alterman with some silver hairbeads before he'd let her use the alters to search for him. Shortly after leaving Paddifraw's Repose, the caravan was ambushed by Dubiel's soldiers. The alterman was one of the people who were killed.
