Soon, Pete noted that Doug had a side-long glance that he'd give his father after such outbursts. Finally, Pete, thoroughly paranoid, attempted to kill his son by throwing him against the refridgerator. Mary, who'd been preparing dinner, rushed forward, holding a knife. The blade slashed open Pete's arms. He tackled Mary to take the knife away. The knife was driven through the bottom of Mary's jaw and into her brain, killing her instantly. Distraught, Pete stabbed himself with that knife. Doug survived, and was adopted by Mary's sister, Vicki Garreau and her husband Jim. Doug remained colicky.
