by user DNL I'm a registered Republican. I've voted for Democrats in the past for significant offices, but nevertheless, I'm registered with the GOP. Ideologically, I'm a right-leaning libertarian, and the Republicans have been closer to me than the Democrats. A lot of that is about to change. Today, the Boston Globe leaked a 77-page PowerPoint developed for Mitt Romney. • by user DNL I'm a registered Republican. In it, Romney's advisors say the following about Rudy Giuliani: Image:GOPElephant.gif Giuliani is called an outside-the-Beltway rock star and truth teller who earned the nation's trust for his leadership of New York City's response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. But he is also described as a one-dimensional Lone Ranger whose social views -- he supports abortion rights and civil unions for gay couples -- could destroy the "GOP brand." (Emphasis added, quote via CNN.) Twenty years ago, when Ronald Reagan left office, the "GOP brand" was "smaller government." It was in believing that, given the freedom to do what's best, an individual will choose to do what's right. It was the belief, in Reagan's words, that " [g]overnment does not solve problems; it subsidizes them;" that " [g]overnment's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives." I am not sure exactly when the "GOP brand" changed from that to the nanny-state regime that Romney is, sadly, accurately describing. But I am sure that it's not a brand I wish to endorse any further. __NOEDITSECTION__ From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki. From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki.
