Gardner played 3 years (1941-43) of junior hockey in Winnipeg, winning the Memorial Cup with the Winnipeg Rangers in 1942-43. He then spent two years in the military before playing with the New York Rovers in 1945-46. The Rangers brought him up to the NHL in 1946-47. Gardner played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks, and Boston Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup in 1948-49 and 1950-51 with the Leafs.
