An unincorporated community is a type of community in Michigan with no formal governmental entity. Often, unincorporated communities are areas which have a "central area" similar to a small downtown or community center surrounded by residential properties. Some unincorporated communities can be likened to small towns, such as Lambertville, which is a suburb of Toledo, Ohio. Some unincorporated communities were once incorporated communities or railroad stops which possessed names. Some of these names, such as Muttonville, still remain in use.

CDPs have boundaries that are established by the Census Bureau and have no official government or political bearing. These boundaries can coincide with existing geopolitical boundaries, but CDP sizes are fluid and can change from census to census.
