- Die Cirth war ein von Daeron dem Spielmann entwickeltes Runensystem. Damit begannen nun auch die Sindar eine geschriebene Sprache zu benutzen. Allerdings erfreute sie sich nicht übermäßiger Beliebtheit, und beinahe alle Elben nutzten später die Tengwar. Die Zwerge jedoch waren von den Cirth begeistert, weshalb sie sie mit in ihre Heimat brachten, wo es sich zu den sogenannten Angerthas (von Tolkien entwickeltes Runenalphabet) entwickelte. So blieben Reste der Schrift bis ins Vierte Zeitalter präsent.
- Wypracowanie alfabetu sindarińskiego rozpoczęło się jeszcze w czasach uwięzienia Melkora. Liternictwo to stosowano do rzeźbienia napisów w drewnie, metalu lub kamieniu, dlatego miało proste linie. Unowocześnieniem Cirthu zajął się mędrzec i pieśniarz z dworu Thingola - Daeron, który opracował Długie runy (Angerthas Daeron), który prawdopodobnie zaadaptował unowocześnienie dokonane przez elfów z Eregionu. Później pismo to zostało zastąpione przez Tengwar. Jednak wcześniej zostało przyjęte prze Krasnoludów i przez ludzi. W Drugiej Erze runy krasnoludzkie uległy kilku drobnym zmianom w Morii - znane są jako Angerthas Moria. W Trzeciej Erze z nich rozwinęła się kolejna odmiana - Angerthas Erebor.

Cirth is plural and is written with a capital C when referring to the writing system— the runes themselves can be called cirth. A single rune is a certh. Many letters have shapes also found in the historical Futhark runes (used in The Hobbit), but their sound values are only similar in a few of the vowels. Rather, the system of assignment of sound values is much more systematic in the Cirth than in the historical runes (e.g., voiced variants of a voiceless sound are expressed by an additional stroke). A similar system has been proposed for a few historical runes (e.g. p ᛈ and w ᚹ as variants of b ᛒ), but is in any case much more obscure. The Cirth are not part of the Unicode Standard. However the ConScript Unicode Registry has defined the U+E080–E0FF range of the Unicode "Private Use Area" for Cirth.
