| - "And with that, Skyler Yancy is down to his final Pokémon!" The announcer's shrill voice echoed through the Pokémon League stadium, inciting a roar of cheers from the audience. "Tobias has managed to tear straight through Skyler's team with only his Darkrai!" Skyler Yancy stood in shock and called his fifth Pokémon back into its PokéBall. Around him were the deafening cheers of fans and spectators chanting out Tobias's name. It seemed as if Skyler's journey into the Kalos League would end in the semi-final round as Tobias and his Darkrai were just too much of a force to handle. The stress of the battle coupled up with the beating afternoon sun only intensified Skyler's pressure. He had to face the facts - he was going to lose. 'Losing' had been a concept unfamiliar to him throughout his whole life. When he first set out on his journey throughout the Kalos region, he had been touted as one of the region's best trainers. He made winning gym battles look easy and had even been broadcast on national television from time-to-time. There were articles, blogs, interviews, videos, and all sorts of other cool things from fans nationwide to cheer him on. He had even come to personalize his appearance to make himself more appealing to the public eye: his blue hat turned backwards complimenting his blonde hair, his light-blue button up with matching shoes to compliment his crystal blue eyes, and his khaki pants to hold everything together. In his time traveling around the Kalos region he had become a celebrity - at the age of 19. In fact, throughout the entire Kalos League tournament he was projected by Pokémon experts to effortlessly win and be crowned the new champion. Tobias was just some mysterious guy with a Darkrai who came out of nowhere. All that was over now. His humiliation at the hands of Tobias being the fatal weapon. And there he stood on his side of the battlefield, clutching his last PokéBall - the last shred of hope contained in his palms. The Pokémon in his PokéBall was undoubtedly his best Pokémon, the one he had bonded with the most on his journey. It was by far his most trusted Pokémon and he was sure it would not fail him. "What's your next move?" Tobias asked from the other side of the field, his Darkrai hovering by his side. "I'm waiting." "In this PokéBall is my signature Pokémon," Skyler replied and held his PokéBall in the air. "I'm sure you already know what it is." "Ah, how could I forget?" Tobias asked with a slight chuckle. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to crushing it with Darkrai." "There will be no crushing!" Skyler shouted and hurled the PokéBall as hard as he could. "Salamence, I'm counting on you!" There was a powerful flash of light and Skyler's blue Dragon-type Pokémon emerged from its PokéBall. With a powerful roar it descended onto the battlefield in front of Skyler, a symbol of its undying loyalty to its trainer. "And Skyler's final Pokémon is his signature Salamence!" The announcer blared through the stadium, inciting another roar of cheers. "Did we expect otherwise? Hopefully his Salamence can turn things around!" "I've been waiting for this," Tobias said with a smirk and pointed to Skyler's Salamence. "Darkrai, finish the battle with an ice beam!" "Salamence, burn it out with flamethrower!" Skyler commanded. "No matter what, you can't let that ice beam hit you!" Darkrai charged up a ball of frost in its hand and thrusted it forward. The attack was fired out in icy lightning bolts. At the same time, Salamence roared with intensity and let loose a powerful charge of flames from its gaping mouth. Both attacks met in the middle, but Salamence's flames were more powerful than Darkrai's ice and the flamethrower overpowered Darkrai's ice beam. Darkrai. The attack hit Darkrai hard and it was thrown to the ground with force. "Dead on!" Skyler cheered and pumped his fist. "Good shot, Salamence!" "It may be a good shot but Darkrai is far from done," Tobias mumbled and snapped his fingers, his Darkrai ascending from the ground almost instantly. "Salamence, don't give it time to attack! Use flamethrower!" Salamence nodded at Skyler's command and let loose another beam of fire out of its mouth. "Darkrai, use protect!" Before Salamence's attack could burn through Darkrai, Darkrai put up a white forcefield in front of it. The flamethrower exploded on contact with Darkrai's forcefield but was not able to penetrate it any further. The Dark-type Pokémon came out unscathed. "And that's a little lesson on 'Reflex 101' for you," Tobias chuckled. "Here, I'll let you humor me. Go ahead and choose your next attack, I'd be honored to let you do that." "You're an asshole, Tobias," Skyler growled and gritted his teeth. There had to be some attack his Salamence knew that could cripple Darkrai. "I've got it! Salamence, use giga impact!" Salamence nodded at Skyler's command and surrounded itself in an orange glow. It let loose a powerful roar and charged straight at Darkrai. Knowing that Tobias wouldn't call out an attack, Salamence loosened all of its power on Darkrai. There was a ground-shaking explosion and a cloud of smoke billowed from the center of the battlefield. "It appears the impact between Salamence and Darkrai has created a smoke cloud!" The announcer echoed throughout the stadium. "Let's see what happens when all this smoke clears out." The announcer's words were like magic as the smoke cleared out almost instantly. Skyler looked on through the clearing with shaky hands and sweaty palms, uncertain of the fate of the Pitch Black Pokémon. To his dismay, Darkrai didn't appear as if it took much damage from Salamence's attack. Salamence, on the other hand, had to recharge its energy from giga impact. "It didn't do a thing!" Skyler gasped. "How could that be?" "You underestimate the power of a legendary Pokémon," Tobias laughed and shook his head. "I thought you'd come prepared, but you're like every other trainer in this tournament." "And Darkrai is still standing!" The announcer exclaimed. "Did we expect anything different from Tobias?" "Now Skyler, you know what I am about to do now," Tobias warned his opponent. "Salamence, get up!" Skyler pleaded, watching his hopes and dreams crash in front of him. "Darkrai, finish this battle now!" Tobias shouted. "Ice beam!" Darkrai obeyed Tobias's command and fired bolts of ice at Salamence. Salamence had no energy to move and took the full force of Darkrai's attack. There was an ice cold explosion on impact and the battlefield was once again filled with smoke. "It's getting chilly here!" The announcer exclaimed. "And it looks like Darkrai may have landed the final blow on Skyler's team." "That's not true!" Skyler shouted, trying to defend his reputation. "I know Salamence lived through that. It had to have lived through that." Finally, the icy smoke began to clear from the stadium and Salamence lay limp on Skyler's side of the field. It had fainted. "And that does it! Tobias and Darkrai have defeated Skyler and advanced to the final round of the Kalos League!" The announcer boomed through the stadium, another wave of cheers exploding from the audience. "And once again Darkrai goes unbeaten! Have we seen a more amazing Pokémon before?" "Salamence, come back..." Skyler croaked and called Salamence back to its PokéBall. He collapsed to his knees and slammed his fist on the ground. "No!" "I expected a better battle out of you," Tobias muttered and called back his Darkrai. "It was not as exciting as I anticipated." It was over. Skyler lost. How could he lose?
