The GSZ220FM has a flatter body shape than the standard (i.e. non-GIO) SZ models as well as a bolt-on rather than set-in neck joint and a tailpiece rather than a through-body string arrangement. It features a basswood body with a flamed maple top bolted to a maple neck with a 22-fret bound rosewood fretboard with pearloid dot position markers. Components include a fixed bridge and tailpiece and dual, covered Ibanez humbucking pickups with individual volume controls. The GSZ120 is a similar model without the flame maple top and covered pickups.
