The introduction describes Schulz's childhood and early adult life, before he started writing Peanuts. It calls him by his nickname (Sparky), and talks about his hobbies, interests and early writing career. The book goes on to detail the strip itself, starting from Schulz's sketches. It shows many Li'l Folks comic strips and Peanuts strips, with side comments by Chip Kidd. The book also refers to companies that have used Peanuts characters in their logos. Kidd also designed the book Only What's Necessary: Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts
