Jonothans County was founded in the 1840s, and its name was intended to be Jonathan's County, after the soldier; the name was to include the apostrophe. The name was misspelled Jonothans (with an extra "O" and no apostrophe) by people who wrote the name on a sign. The misspelling stuck.
