Acarapis externus, is an external parasite infecting the neck region of honey bees. These mites are generally less than 175 micrometres (0.007 in) long, and can only be identified under a microscope. A. externus can be found exclusively on the ventral and lateral sides of the area behind the head capsule of its host bee. These mites feed on the bee's haemolymph at this location. Two other parasitic bee mites resembling the tracheal mite are A. dorsalis, and A. woodi.
