| - A heat exchanger is a device built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. The media may be separated by a solid wall, so that they never mix, or they may be in direct contact. Common appliances containing a heat exchanger include sterilizers, air conditioners, refrigerators, and space heaters. Heat exchangers are also used in chemical processing and power production. Perhaps the most commonly known heat exchanger is a car radiator, which cools the hot radiator fluid by taking advantage of airflow over the surface of the radiator.

Perhaps the most commonly known heat exchanger is a car radiator, which cools the hot radiator fluid by taking advantage of airflow over the surface of the radiator. The lung is a gas exchanger, which is closely analogous to a heat exchanger. Again using in the car radiator example, heat is taken from the engine and eliminated into the surrounding air, the lung does this for carbon dioxide, and at the same time it takes up oxygen.
