The Republican Guard is a special operations group of the UNSC Defense Force, tasked primarily with providing general security and close protection services for the Chancellor of the Unified Earth Government, Members of the Assembly (MA), diplomats, and important federal properties. The Guard draws from special operations forces of all branches of UNSC service, and frequently cross-trains with law enforcement personnel. Republican Guards are identified when on-duty by their UN-blue shemaghs and berets with UEG flashes, and law enforcement badges when in plainclothes, as they are recognised as law enforcement officers for the duration of their assignments.

Though the Guard is tasked with the personal security of the Chancellor and General Assembly, the military defense of the UEG capital is left to the 1st Capital Division, largely for tradition.
