The "Colony of Balin" refers to the settling of the group of Dwarves led by Balin in TA 2989 to recapture Khazad-dûm from the Orcs that had inhabited the ancient city. They succeeded at first, but in 2994 Balin was killed by an orc archer - the colony then tried to escape, but the combined prevention and terror of the Watcher in the Water and of Durin's Bane (the Balrog) stopped them, and all members were slaughtered. Their story was found in the Book of Mazarbul when the Fellowship of the Ring passed through Moria in January, 3019.
