| - Greenland is a large island in the north Atlantic Ocean east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Most of Greenland lies north of the Arctic Circle, thus in the Arctic. The southern portion, where most inhabitants live, lies in the Northern Temperate Zone. The southern portion, where most inhabitants live, lies in the Northern Temperate Zone. Greenland, other than the far north where there is little snow, and sheltered coastal areas, is covered with an ice cap. There has been a slight rise in average temperature, from 33 °F to 35 °F in southern Greenland during the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. This has extended the growing season by several weeks, from mid May to mid September, and invigorated growth of trees. While there were sparse birch forests in southern Greenland at the time of Viking settlement, those were cut. The current small forests are recent plantings. A few farmers grow potatoes and there has been recent success with cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli on an experimental farm.
