Joe Biggles was a fisherman in Dunwich, England. Some years prior to Alistair's visit, Biggles had taken a team of divers from the National Trust to explore Dunwich's drowned churches in the North Sea. Biggles later told fellow fisherman Ralph Hoadley that the team had known the name Great Cthulhu and had laughed at it. One of them, a woman, was killed when a large octopus pulled her face plate off during the dive. Hoadley shared this story with Alistair before they went out to sea.
