Bharat, (Northern Sanskrit: भारत, Punjabi: ਭਾਰਤ), often referred by westerners as India, officially the Republic of Bharat is a country forming part of South Asia. It borders Tibet, and Nepal to the north-east, Burma to the east, Khorasan and Persia to the west, and Dravida to the south. Four world religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and Christianity arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also helped shape the country's diverse culture. Unified by Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya in 1556, it fought battles with the British in 1757 and won lead by Ranjit Singh.
