  • The 1992 Kansas City Chiefs season ended with a 10–6 record and Wild Card spot in the 1993 playoffs. The Chiefs were shut out by the San Diego Chargers 0–17 in the Wild Card round. The 1992 Chiefs season began on a high note when on September 6 they beat the San Diego Chargers 24–10. 22 days later at Arrowhead on Monday Night Football they beat the Los Angeles Raiders 27–7. The Chiiefs would eventually go 4–2 in the first half of tehe season. Then just like that they would lose two in a row including a 27–3 lss at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The running game would eventually be a weakness for Kansas City as Barry Word led the team with only 607 yards for the season. The second half of the season started well for Kansas City as they won four in a row including a 23–7 win over the New York Jets on November 29. New Chief quarterback Dave Krieg platyed well as he passed for 3,115 yards for the season. Defense would be the key for the Chiefs 3rd straight playoff berth as Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith recorded 14.5 sacks each. The Chiefs' division championship hopes took a major blow on December 19 and their involvement in the postseason party came into question. Kansas City was simply not ready to play and was easily defeated by the Giants 35–21. New York had lost five games in a row before this game. A victory would have assured the Chiefs of their third straight playoff berth and given them complete control over the AFC West race. Instead, they had to rely on other teams' losses. The Giants scored on five consecutive possessions form the end of the first quarter through the middle of the third quarter to lead at one point, 35–7. Kansas City, which had come from behind in previous games during the season, had dug a hole they couldn't get out of this time. The Giants ran up 348 yards of total offense and controlled the ball for almost 35 minutes. With the season and a playoff berth on the line, the Chiefs rise to the occasion and bury the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead, 42–20 on December 27. The Chiefs finished at 10–6 and earned a playoff berth.
