Jürgens wrote over 800 songs and sold over 100 million records and obtained Swiss citizenship in 2007, where he lived until his cardiac arrest, resulting in his death in the country in 2014. Matt Monro, the United Kingdom's participant in 1964, was impressed with Udo's entry that he decided to cover it with the English version known as "Walk Away". Monro also covered his 1966 song in English.

Jürgens wrote over 800 songs and sold over 100 million records and obtained Swiss citizenship in 2007, where he lived until his cardiac arrest, resulting in his death in the country in 2014. Matt Monro, the United Kingdom's participant in 1964, was impressed with Udo's entry that he decided to cover it with the English version known as "Walk Away". Monro also covered his 1966 song in English. Before Jürgens passed away, he stated that he would like to be on the stage in Vienna for the interval act in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Violinist Lidia Baich paid tribute to him by performing a portion of "Merci, Chérie" as part of the 2015 grand final opening.
