The bridge was originally proposed in the late 1970s. Previous to that, the only transportation was by boat. Plans were made, but it was deemed to costly and the project was scrapped in 1982. In the 1990s, the need for a bridge intensified. New plans were made and construction began in 1997. After many delays, the bridge finally opened in 2005. Since 2010 The Span added on a lower section for trains to go over to Adoha with the Clymene Central Railway.
